Reuters reports that the Wizards of Waverly Place star, in her capacity as the newest (and youngest) Ambassador for UNICEF's U.S. Fund, is going on a fact-finding mission to Ghana to learn more about the dire living conditions of that country's children.
Gomez will work with UNICEF in its goal to eliminate preventable deaths among the world's children.
"Every day 25,000 children die from preventable causes. I stand with UNICEF in the belief that we can change that number from 25,000 to zero," Gomez noted in a statement. "I know we can achieve this because every moment, UNICEF is on the ground providing children with the lifesaving assistance needed to ensure zero becomes a reality."
According to a recent study, Ghana is ranked 30 out of 195 countries with the highest mortality rates for children under five.
